So that you and your family can camp in peace.

Is a tent heater safe?

In simple terms, yes! Tent heaters are made for tents. So, no need to worry if it might cause you harm in the night. The heaters are safe if you follow the manufacturer’s specifications. As well it also depends on what model you buy and how you use it. There are three tent heaters that I have talked about on this site:  Battery powered, propane, and electric. Really any of these are safe as long as you make sure that you know what you’re doing.

Any heating device can pose a risk. Poorly made or improperly operated tent heater can be dangerous because of fire hazard or suffocation hazard. Since these heaters have to be powered by power and/or conduct a lot of heat, if it comes in to contact with flammable objects then it can cause a fire.   The more dangerous hazard is suffocation. Carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases are a byproduct of the burning of fuel. When in an enclosed space, like a tent, carbon monoxide levels can quickly become toxic and cause serious illness or death.

How do you know if a tent heater is safe?

  1. Only buy tent-safe heaters

Only heaters that are specifically designed for inside tent use should be used inside your tent. Tent specific heaters are designed for use inside a confined space & have additional safety features.

  • Position your tent heater properly!

Make sure that your tent heater is positioned safely somewhere in your tent. Since the heater conducts so much heat having flammable objects in close vicinity will become a dangerous hazard. Position it well at night also so that you or someone else doesn’t accidently knock it over.

  • Ensure proper ventilation.

When it comes to tent heaters, you need to make sure you know which ones you’re dealing with. For example, propane tent heaters need to have proper ventilation. Carbon monoxide and other gases can be released by the propane heater or an open flame. Which then can quickly reach toxic levels and cause serious illnesses or death. Before beginning the use, ensure that there is proper ventilation. Make sure there is airflow under the tent to fly out and into the tent body.
